Make your own pattern Tutorial

This was one of the suggestions I have got for tutorial: Patterns! Doller who use tool shading usually have a lot of tuto rials about how to put a pattern on their dollz but I never found any for pixel doller. This tutorial is about how you can make your own pattern so I'll try to make one about how to add an already made pattern.

Step 1: Making your doll

First of all you have to choose a base and the type of doll you want to make. I'll make a formal dress because it's easier to make and the pattern will be found on almost all of the fabric of the dress.

This is the base I'll be using for this tutorial. It comes from LTnnOg.

Now simply make your doll as if there wouldn't any pattern. Make the dress the color of the original fabric, the background one. You can make all of the doll except for the accesories, it's easier to add them later.

Step 2: Preparing the pattern

The first palette is the background color and the second one is the color I'll use for the pattern. In this exemple the contrast between the background color and the pattern color is not really high. It will give a smooth effect so that the attention is not focused on the pattern. But make sure that the palettes are not too similar, we still need to see that there's a pattern here!

Copy and paste the original doll you have made and replace the color of the background by the color of the pattern. If you want a silky like effect on the fabric of the pattern you have to make a palette with a lot of contrast. It'll look strange when you get to this part but don't worry.
To replace the colors well (the color tones have to be at the exact same place on both of the dollz) use this simple technic. Click RIGHT on the color you want to add with the color pickup tool and then click LEFT with the same tool on the color you want to replace. Use the eraser tool to change the color. While clicking RIGHT*really important to click right if you don't want to erase your doll* drag the eraser on the doll. The color you clicked left on is supposed to turn on the color you clicked right on at first. Do the same thing for all of the 4 tones of the dress.

Now copy and paste the original doll once again. Keep the plain dresses somewhere, you'll need them later. Using one of the MsPaint colors that you are sure not to use anywhere else, draw your pattern. It doesn't matter if the pattern exceedes from the edge of the dress.

Step 3: Adding the pattern

With the selection tool, select the pattern doll and drag if on the pattern colored doll.

It is really important to have the transparent background selected. You have to make sure that the pattern doll and the pattern color dollz are exactly one on the other. When this is done, keep the pattern doll selected.

Now just click RIGHT on the MsPaint color you use to draw the pattern. What will happen is that MsPaint will consider this color as the background color and as you have the transparent background selected it will make this color transparent and the rest of the doll will be the same.

This is what you are supposed to have now. The pattern is done! Easy right?!

You can now add the accesories you want, end there you go! Hope this tutorial will be useful. Now have fun and thy this with all of the possible colors and patterns :D
